Exercise Dominion Wisely

God has given us dominion over his entire created order. At creation, he gave us the right and the ability to protect his creation and develop its resources. God expects us to invest our gifts well, so that we see progress in our lives and in his world. But our dominion over the earth is a limited one; our authority has limits and it comes with the weight of responsibility. Ultimately, God owns 'the cattle on a thousand hills'. We are simply custodians of his natural order, caretakers of what rightfully belongs to God. We have no right to break into God's house and start smashing up the furniture. The same is true of our own lives. As a human being, my life was a gift from God. One day, it will be returned to him and I will answer for how I have invested this precious resource. As a Christian, my new, rejuvenated life has been purchased with a price, I am not my own. So, I can exercise dominion, making decisions that change my situation and the environment. But I must always remember that my decisions should reflect how God would respond to the situation. If I trust him, his word will guide me so that I make choices that have his approval, decisions that will bring his favour into my life.
Prayer: 'Thank you for the gift of life today, Lord. I want to live in a way that is truly honouring to you, in a way that brings a great return for your investment in me.'
