Speak the Word God has given You

23 June 2018

Luke 4:35-36 '"Be quiet!" Jesus said sternly. "Come out of him!" Then the demon threw the man down before them all and came out without injuring him. All the people were amazed and said to each other, "What is this teaching? With authority and power he gives orders to evil spirits and they come out!"' (NIV)

When Jesus spoke, he spoke in line with the Scriptures and when he gave a command, things happened! The word of God always prevailed on Jesus' lips, whatever the challenge he was facing. When he spoke the word of God, it overcame the forces of nature, as when the storm was stilled at his command. When he spoke God's word, it overcame demonic powers, leaving oppressed and possessed people totally at peace. When he spoke the word, it overcame sickness and disease, as his entire ministry was characterised by remarkable acts of healing. On every level, Jesus' use of God's word produced unprecedented breakthrough. When we talk about Jesus speaking God's word, we don't necessarily mean that he quoted directly from the Old Testament Scriptures – though he sometimes did that, of course (during the wilderness temptations, for example). No, but Jesus was so well versed in what the Scriptures said that he could appropriate them in every kind of specific situation, to bring about the result God wanted. He knew the Scriptures so well that he was able to naturally speak them out in his own words, whenever he faced a human need. God has given us his word, too, so that we will learn to use it as Jesus did. You are I are made right with God through what Jesus did on the cross. God has declared us right with him, in Christ. Now, the word of God has as much power in our mouths as it did in the mouth of Jesus! We need to become so familiar with the Bible and what it says that we can bring out the right word for every need and challenge we face. Not so that we just repeat promised like worn out clichés, but so that we really understand what the Scripture is telling us; so that the Holy Spirit can illuminate any piece of the Bible in our minds right when we and other people need it most.

Prayer: 'Holy Spirit, I want to speak the word of God into specific situations just as Jesus did. Please help me to start today, by learning more of God's word, and by speaking it into the challenges I face right now.'
