Building Your Support Base

29 March 2024

Nehemiah 4:18-21 '… and each of the builders wore his sword at his side as he worked. But the man who sounded the trumpet stayed with me. Then I said to the nobles, the officials and the rest of the people, "The work is extensive and spread out, and we are widely separated from each other along the wall. Wherever you hear the sound of the trumpet, join us there. Our God will fight for us!" So we continued the work with half the men holding spears, from the first light of dawn till the stars came out.' (NIV)

Nehemiah was a great leader and he understood something about keeping enemies away! Whenever God gives you an important task, a high calling, spiritual enemies will arise that want to kill it before it's even born. That was Nehemiah's experience as he called the people to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem after it had been ruined and its people demoralised. How should we deal with attacks from the enemy of our souls, the devil? We deal with them by standing in company with other strong Christians. It's easy to stand as a Christian when you're in church on Sunday. There are Christians all over the place. There's a sound of worship and prayer and the preaching of God's word. But go back to work on Monday and it can be a very different story. The Christians have spread out; now they're all over the city and your defences can feel weak. You will need some mechanism for calling your co-warriors and co-builders together when you face attack. Whether it's the phone list of your cell group members, or a work-based prayer group, or a college Christian network. You will need to have some kind of support network set up – in advance. So, don't wait until the pressure hits. Get working on a support network today, and if you already have one, work to make it stronger. Then, when you need to sound a trumpet of alarm, you'll have the support that you need.

Prayer: 'Lord, help me to have a strong support group around me when I come under attack. I know that you've put people around me already who can help me in that way, so help me to work at building those relationships.'
