See the Promise when it Comes!

Ezra 1:1 'In the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, in order to fulfill the word of the LORD spoken by Jeremiah, the LORD moved the heart of Cyrus king of Persia to make a proclamation throughout his realm…' (NIV)
Divine promises point us forward toward a brighter future. Promises are paintings of our future portrayed on the canvas of our present. Promises are picture postcards showing where will end up as we follow God's call on our lives. Sometimes, though, we can be very slow to recognise the fulfilment of a divine promise even when it's right before our eyes. Often, we come into some new season of favour, some new breakthrough situation, and forget that God had promised this a long time before. Or we see some great new blessing in our lives and forget to give thanks for it, or to let others know where it came from. It is significant that the very first verse of the book of Ezra ascribes the amazing events that followed to the fulfilment of a prophetic promise. It's as if the author is saying, 'Whatever you read in the following pages, remember this: it all happened because God is faithful to keep his promises. He gets the credit!' If we're not watching for a promise to be fulfilled, we won't recognize it when it comes, and we will miss the chance to give thanks and to brag on what God has done for us. Keep an eye out for God's fulfilled promises in your life, and when you see a promise come to pass, no matter how small, be quick to share news of it with others. That way, you make God's name great!
Prayer: 'Lord, help me not to overlook your promises. Help me to keep them always before me, so that when they are fulfilled I can give you credit for them, and give you thanks.'
