Do private values affect the public performance of public figures?

This was the key question in a debate featuring Next Wave International director Mal Fletcher on BBC World News recently.

The president of the International Motor Racing Federation, Max Mosley, recently won a liable case against a British tabloid newspaper. The newspaper had exposed his involvement in SM sex orgies with a number of London prostitutes. He may have won the case, but did he lose something more important -- his position of trust and respect in the public sphere?
