The Great British House Cleaning of 2011

28 August 2011

What impact have the riots in London and other cities had on British identity and values?

In a recent editorial and its accompanying press release, which was picked up by several major news wires and news websites from Canada to Germany, Mal Fletcher argued that Britain is going through its biggest house clean in a generation.

The recent riots, he said, are just the latest indicator in a sea-change that has seen the public lose confidence in the institutions they previously trusted: the banks, corporations, MPs, the church, the media and more recently the police and judiciary.

'People are looking for something to lean on,' Mal said, 'some sense of reassurance that while the economy is weak, other aspects of the social order remain robust.'

Mal was interviewed on BBC Radio, discussing his thoughts on this and exploring how public institutions and church and community groups might move things forward in a more positive direction.
